This message is a CYBERCRIME WARNING to our partners and friends in the business.
In 2024, we had some very dramatic run-ins with cybercrime. In three situations, business e-mails were intercepted, payment details were manipulated and sadly, two incidents even resulted in actual financial losses. We didn’t even realize it in the beginning, but learned it the hard way and could finally analyze what had happened. In the meantime, we have taken counter-measures that we are reviewing regularly, and these measures have proven effective. Since then, we have not experienced any further issues. We always immediately informed our business partners or friends affected in the initial cases, but feel it is time now to raise your general attention and share with you conclusions we have drawn from it. We don’t know the exact structure of your IT system, so definitely get support from your own IT-service provider, but at least work regularly e.g. on the following or, if necessary, even further measures:
Change your passwords regularly,
be extremely careful with invoice emails,
double-check sudden updates to payment information,
use e-signatures or secure platforms for invoicing and
be cautious about email attachments
Cyber-attacks often go unnoticed but have a massive potential to cause lasting destruction of business and friendly relations. We all must help to avoid that. We all can refer to a lot of successful years in the event industry and we all have built a solid and even worldwide reputation and network. If cyber-attacks still happen, immediately involve the initial banks, competent law enforcement authorities or just go to the next police station. And immediately speak or write to all partners that are involved in this particular case. But please also note that you may not raise false accusations against persons or companies who are perhaps even not involved. In cyber-crime cases reality often gets blurred and false accusations can also be very destructive for those affected. As a consequence they even may result in substantial claims for damages against you.
