Biography

Born in Meath, Ireland, Rock vocalist Robin McAuley was always surrounded by music growing up. No surprise as his Mother Elizabeth or “Betty” as she was more commonly known, was herself a great musician and very popular among the locals. Listening mostly to Motown as Rock music was not aired that much on Irish daytime radio, Robin soon discovered the great Thin Lizzy and actually got to see them perform locally at the ripe old age of 12 years. This lit a spark with Robin that still burns bright to this day.

Always wanting to be a drummer Robin played the local scene in Ireland until he moved to London England in 1973. Little did he know that after seeing Thin Lizzy perform at Wembley Arena on the “Live And Dangerous” Tour, some years later he would perform and record with two of Rocks iconic guitarists, Thin Lizzy’s very own Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham.

While singing with a local band in West London, Robin was approached by bass player Ralph Hood and Mick O’Donoghue. Soon thereafter he would become the new lead vocalist for London band Grand Prix – opening for Sammy Hagar on his “Standing Hampton” tour and Iron Maiden on the “Number Of The Beast” tour.

Grand Prix entered the British charts with the single “Keep On Believing” taken from the album Samurai. The latter remaining a strong favorite for many all these years later.

Frankfurt Germany was next on Robin’s agenda where he recorded a remake of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven” together with the amazing Bobby Kimball from Toto. Under producer Frank Farian, Far Corporation blasted to #8 on the UK Singles charts with Stairway, selling more the 2 Million copies in 1985. Taken from the album “Division One”, Far Corporation became favorites at radio for several years and follow up albums.

Scorpions guitarist Rudolph Schenker heard “Stairway To Heaven” on German radio and mentioned Robin’s name to his famous guitarist brother Michael Schenker, who was auditioning new singers at Rudolf’s studio. Michael was quick to point out that he had approached Robin four (4) years earlier while watching him perform with Grand Prix in London, an offer Robin declined at that time. Grand Prix and MSG were label mates at Chrysalis Records.

Robin was contacted by MSG management and this time he decided to audition. The last of seventeen singers, Robin was chosen by Michael, Rudolph, Klaus Meine and the management to be Michael’s new singer. Michael decided that he wanted a change and a partner and he suggested renaming the band to McAuley Schenker Group while still keeping the MSG logo. After much discussion the McAuleySchenkerGroup was born in 1985.

The new partnership soon signed a deal with EMI Germany. The aim was to break into the American charts and US daytime radio. So it was that for the first time MSG had videos on MTV and VH1 plus much success at Rock Radio with hits like “Bad Boys”, “Gimme Your Love”, “This Is My Heart”, “Save Yourself” and the incredible power ballads “When I’m Gone” and everyone’s favorite “Anytime”.

When Grunge and Alternative hit the airwaves in the early 90’s, ‘80’s Rock took a back seat for several years. Robin kept busy though lending his voice to many Cleopatra Records Tribute projects, like Aerosmith, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Journey, Garth Brooks, Bruce Springstein, KISS. Produced by the late and great Guitarist, Bob Kulick.

Robin returned to the stage but this time as frontman for the band Survivor. With massive hits like “Eye Of The Tiger”, “Burning Heart”, “High On You”, “Can’t Hold Back”, and many more, Robin fronted Survivor from 2000 to 2006. The band performed on Dancing With The Stars viewed by 58 million viewers on the night. 2012 brought Robin to Las Vegas and a 7 year residency with “Raiding The Rock Vault” performing some 1500 shows.

2026 MSG dates already on the calendar for Japan with more dates to be announced following the release of MSG “Don’t Sell Your Soul” album. Robin can also be heard on his 3 solo records “Standing On The Edge”, “Alive” and “Soulbound” – all released on Frontiers Music Srl. Also on Frontiers is Robin’s other project, the amazing Black Swan, now about to release their 3rd record “Paralyzed”.

2026 is already beginning to look like another busy year for this Irish Rocker who seems to defy the age tag, where age is just a number and aging is just a diverse individual experience!
