Biography

Nearly two decades on, SCAR SYMMETRY are still light years ahead of the competition.

Formed in Sweden in 2004, Scar Symmetry were a unique proposition from the start. Although clearly owing a debt to the pioneering melodic death metal bands of the ‘90s, guitarist Per Nilsson and his comrades were walking their own evolutionary path.

Scar Symmetry stands as one of the most visionary forces in modern melodic death metal. Hailing from Sweden, the band has built a reputation for blending razor-sharp technical precision with soaring melodies and a cinematic sense of scale. Their music seamlessly fuses brutal growls and pristine clean vocals, creating a dynamic contrast that feels both intellectually ambitious and emotionally powerful.

What truly sets Scar Symmetry apart is their conceptual depth. Across albums like Pitch Black Progress, Holographic Universe, and The Singularity trilogy, the band explores expansive themes centered on artificial intelligence, transhumanism, and the rise of “neohumans.” Their lyrics delve into the philosophical and existential consequences of technological evolution—questioning identity, consciousness, and what it truly means to be human in an age where machines may surpass their creators. Rather than treating AI as mere science fiction spectacle, Scar Symmetry approaches it as an inevitable turning point in human destiny.

Musically, they balance complexity and accessibility with rare mastery. Intricate guitar harmonies, futuristic synth textures, and relentless yet precise drumming form a soundscape that mirrors their forward-thinking subject matter. The result is a band that doesn’t just write songs—they construct sonic blueprints for possible futures.

In 2023, Scar Symmetry released their most recent album, the second chapter of The Singularity trilogy, an intergalactic saga: The Singularity (Phase II – Xenotaph). Harder, darker, more complex and more joyously progressive than ever, it was more than worth the nine-year wait.

Per Nilsson cheerfully admits that creating a follow-up to Phase I took longer than expected because, not unreasonably, he simply had other things to do, including touring the world with Meshuggah, as stand-in for the temporarily absent Fredrik Thordendal. Now that the world has largely woken from its Covid-induced stupor, Per Nilsson is looking forward to fully reactivating Scar Symmetry and taking the dramatic, pulverising events of Phase II to the people.

Scar Symmetry is more than a metal band; they are storytellers of the post-human era, architects of sound who dare to imagine the next stage of evolution—and make it thunder through amplifiers.
