Biography
Neal Morse (born August 2, 1960) is an American singer, multi-instrumentalist, and composer based in Nashville, Tennessee. Widely regarded as one of the leading figures in modern progressive rock, Morse first gained international recognition in 1992 as the founder of Spock’s Beard, which he formed with his brother Alan. The band quickly became a driving force in the ‘90s prog revival, releasing a series of critically acclaimed albums that established Morse as a distinctive voice in the genre.
In 1999, Morse joined Mike Portnoy, co-founder of Dream Theater, along with Roine Stolt of The Flower Kings and Pete Trewavas of Marillion, to form the prog supergroup Transatlantic, further cementing his global reputation.
Following his conversion to Christianity in 2002, Morse made the bold decision to leave Spock’s Beard and devote his music to his faith. Since then, he has created a prolific body of spiritually themed work, including numerous large-scale progressive rock concept albums built around biblical narratives and themes of redemption and transformation. At the same time, he has remained active in Transatlantic and launched several additional collaborative projects, including Yellow Matter Custard, Flying Colors, and The Neal Morse Band.
Beyond his progressive rock output, Morse has also released a number of intimate singer-songwriter albums and expanded into musical theater. His full-scale stage musical Brother Andrew is scheduled to premiere at the The George Theater in Houston, Texas, in April 2026.
