Biography
Florida Death Metal | Est. 1984
MASSACRE is one of the foundational names in Florida death metal, with a history that reaches back to the earliest days of the genre. Formed in 1984 in Orlando,Florida, the band became part of the underground movement that helped define the sound, aesthetic and attitude of American death metal.
In 1985, vocalist Kam Lee joined MASSACRE and became instrumental intransforming the band’s musical direction from its original heavy/thrash roots into the primitive, aggressive death metal sound that would become its trademark. Lee’s early vocal work with MASSACRE is widely recognized as an important contribution to the development of the death metal growl, first captured on the band’s legendary AGGRESSIVE TYRANT demo in 1986.
Through the second half of the 1980s, MASSACRE became deeply intertwined with the emerging Florida death metal underground, producing influential demos including AGGRESSIVE TYRANT, CHAMBER OF AGES and THE SECOND COMING. The band’s early work established a distinctive combination of crushing guitar work, horror-inspired imagery, primitive aggression and extreme vocals thatwould become central to the developing genre.
In 1991, MASSACRE released its landmark debut album, FROM BEYOND, throughEarache Records. Recorded at Morrisound Studios in Tampa, the album became one of the defining releases of early Florida death metal and remains a cornerstoneof the genre.
Following multiple eras, line-up changes and periods of inactivity, MASSACRE entered a new chapter under the leadership of Kam Lee. Rather than functioning as a nostalgia act, Lee’s vision was to re-establish MASSACRE as an active, creative death metal band—one capable of honoring its history while continuing to produce new music.
That philosophy became fully realized with RESURGENCE, released in 2021. Thealbum marked MASSACRE’s return to the forefront of old-school death metal andestablished the foundation for an extensive period of continuous recording andrelease activity.
MYTHOS, a 2022 EP, expanded that direction through a strong Lovecraftian and horror-based concept. Rather than waiting years between releases, MASSACRE adopted a more underground-oriented approach, releasing a steady stream of individual EPs and singles.
Those releases were subsequently brought together on CORPUS UMBRA, acompilation that collected the band’s independently released material includingDEAD BEYOND DEATH, ANCIENT EVIL, HEADLESS HALLOWEENand CASKETMUTILATIONS, along with additional material on the physical edition. CORPUS UMBRA served as a document of the band’s continuing creative output between MYTHOS and the next phase of its evolution.
In 2024, MASSACRE released TRI-POCALYPSE, a concept EP inspired by John Carpenter’s Apocalypse Trilogy: The Thing, Prince of Darkness and In the Mouth of Madness. The release demonstrated the band’s willingness to expand its horror aesthetic and explore new territory while maintaining its foundation in traditional death metal.
That same year saw the release of NECROLUTION, the band’s fifth studio album.Rather than attempting to recreate FROM BEYOND, NECROLUTION deliberatelylooked beyond MASSACRE’s own catalog and toward the broader sound andatmosphere of late-’80s and early-’90s death metal. The album was conceived asan exploration of the primitive character, production aesthetics and songwritingapproach of the genre’s formative era—an evolution of the old-school philosophyrather than a repetition of the past.
MASSACRE continued its output in 2025 with CORPUS MORTIS, which compiled together additional releases including THEY NEVER DIE, THE RATS IN THE WALLS, and MERMAID IN A MANHOLE. Followed by the cover EP ROT IN ACID. In2026, the band released PARASYTE (BITE), continuing its current creative direction.
At the same time, MASSACRE continues to acknowledge and preserve its historical foundation. The 2026 TYRANTS OF DEATH reissue revisits the band’s earliestmaterial, providing a modern presentation of recordings from the formative periodof the Florida underground.
THE CURRENT ERA
Today, MASSACRE is a working, active death metal band—not a legacy project.
Kam Lee remains the band’s vocalist, central creative force and driving figure. The current live incarnation features Carlos Gonzalez on lead guitar and EldenSantos on drums, with the band’s modern performance configuration designed to deliver the full weight of MASSACRE’s material in a live setting.
MASSACRE’s modern history has also embraced a flexible recording and performance structure, allowing different musicians to contribute according to the demands of recording, touring and live performance. This approach has enabled the band to remain productive while maintaining a consistent musical and visual identity.
The result is a MASSACRE that respects where it came from without being imprisoned by it.
The band’s identity remains firmly rooted in old-school death metal, but its creative direction continues to evolve through new material, new concepts, new recordings and live performances. Horror, the macabre, Lovecraftian themes and the darker side of the human imagination remain central to the MASSACRE aesthetic, while the music continues to draw from the primitive aggression that defined the genre’s formative years.
More than four decades after its formation, MASSACRE remains committed to theunderground principle that created it:
Create. Evolve. Remain uncompromising.
MASSACRE does not exist simply to recreate its past.
The past established the foundation.
The present keeps it alive.
The future belongs to what comes next.
